On May 25, 1983, the third installment of George Lucas’ “Star Wars” movie saga was released into theaters. Thirty years later, “Episode VI — Return of the Jedi” remains quite a controversial film among “Star Wars” fans, largely due to the tiny inhabitants of the forest moon of Endor.

The introduction of the Ewoks, the furry creatures who figure prominently in the movie’s climactic battle, caused a disturbance in the Force so great that people are still griping about it, and loudly. Heck, Stephen Colbert even ate one on the air.

Since 30 years have passed, and episode VII on the way, MTV News got three experts to weigh in on the debate.

Writer/producer Andrew Zilch, a “Star Wars” fan since childhood, couldn’t help but notice the ever-swelling hatred of all things Ewok. “I started to realize inevitably any discussion about ‘Return of the Jedi’ would always devolve into total Ewok-bashing,” Zilch told MTV News. “It would always be like, ‘The Ewoks ruined the classic trilogy, blah blah blah…’ “

So, Zilch decided to do something about it. “I thought it would be funny to write a song from the perspective of someone who really earnestly defends the Ewoks and feels like they were treated unfairly over the years,” Zilch said. With the help of a few co-workers at HBOlab, he created an accompanying video in 2008 to celebrate the Ewoks for the film’s 25th anniversary. The clip features “Episode VI” star Billy Dee Williams and has gotten nearly a million YouTube views.

J.J. Abrams Suggests ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Offs Depend On ‘Episode VII’ Success

A prevailing theory among Ewok-haters is that the creatures were originally conceived as a sure way to appeal to small children and sell plush toys to their parents. But Eric Geller of TheForce.net disregards that assumption. “Call me naïve,” Geller said, “I have a hard time believing that somebody who invests as much in storytelling as George Lucas would create something that is so fundamental to the movie. And regardless of what you think of the Ewoks, I think it’s safe to say the movie would have turned out very differently without them. I have a hard time believing that he would choose to go that direction and include that element if he didn’t see some storytelling potential there.”

Film historian and Wesleyan University professor Jeanine Basinger isn’t a huge fan of the Ewoks, but not because of any supposed merchandising ploy. “For me, they kind of slowed down and interfered with the story that I actually was most deeply connected to,” Professor Basinger said. “I don’t mind creatures… I’m expecting creatures when I’m in a movie of that type.”

William Shatner Has Some ‘Star Wars’ Suggestions For J.J. Abrams.

Instead, he argues that the movies is more about the family element. “It has a little bit different element to it, a little more depth, a little bit more resonance, and when Luke has to confront his father, and when his father saves him and he begs his father for help — that gives a dimension that is more epic, more dramatic, more operatic, it brings something into the picture that is so not Ewokian, that you kind of get thrown off base.”

Despite the distraction, Professor Basinger is not overly bothered by the Ewoks’ presence in the movie. “Could I have used less of them? I think so, yes. Did they really drive me crazy? Not so much,” she said. “I can live with them.”

Love them or hate them, what’s most impressive about the Ewoks (and their creator) is that people are still passionate about them thirty years later, noted Basinger. “Honestly, that’s pretty phenomenal,” she said. “The fact is, people are still mad over the Ewoks. They still care. And that’s pretty darn great.”

Before The Walt Disney Co. could complete its $4.05 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm in October, its lead attorney, Brian McCarthy, and a team from Skadden Arps faced a daunting task: figuring out whether George Lucas actually owned the rights to Han Solo, Lando Calrissian and about 10,000 characters and elements from the six Star Wars movies and their various offshoots.

LIST: Power Lawyers: THR Unveils America’s Top 100 Entertainment Attorneys

McCarthy, the head of his white-shoe firm’s Los Angeles office, narrowed the task down to 290 primary, copyrighted characters. To sort through them all, he assembled a legal team of bona fide Star Wars fans. “I tried to find people in the office who … didn’t have to spend time figuring out who Princess Leia was,” recalls McCarthy. “I was shocked by how many people knew the intricacies of whose father-in-law was married to whose sister.” The top-secret process — code names were employed to keep office chatter to a minimum — started in June 2012, and crunch time came during a six-week period beginning in August, when as many as 20 Skadden employees (from $500-an-hour partners to less expensive paralegals) pored over complex chain-of-title documents related to Star Wars and Lucasfilm.

“George had a history of associations with different people who had different rights, so sorting that all out was our biggest challenge,” says McCarthy. “Like anything else in the entertainment industry, if something becomes successful, everybody puts their hand up. So, over the years, there were people who put up their hands.”

Working with Lucas’ lawyers at Latham Watkins, McCarthy’s team researched all copyright assignments and distribution agreements. The team eventually determined that all the important copyrights were intact and available to sell to Disney, save for distribution rights for the original Star Wars film, which 20th Century Fox maintains even after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm closed Oct. 30.

Despite the complexity of the deal and the worldwide headlines the announcement generated, McCarthy — who also worked on Disney’s 2006 purchase of Pixar Animation Studios — says the transaction surprisingly was smooth. He never even had to fly to Lucasfilm’s San Francisco and Marin County headquarters, leaning on Skadden associates from the firm’s Palo Alto offices to handle the face-to-face work. “I’ve seen deals where there are enormous sticking points,” says McCarthy. “But this one had a sense of rhythm and momentum.”

Could it have been guided by the Force?

LEGO is breaking its own record: Today, the toy company unveiled a life-sized model of the Star Wars X-wing starfighter in Times Square. It’s the world’s largest LEGO model, 42 times larger than the retail set and 43 feet long, with a 44 foot-wide wingspan. It’s a project more than a year in the making, requiring 32 builders to work for some 17,000 hours in the Czech Republic. Last week, LEGO invited EW to the hangar where the model was kept, in top secrecy, for several days after being shipped by boat from Europe. “Honestly, I didn’t think we could pull it off,” says Erik Varszegi, a LEGO master builder who worked as a consultant on the project. “I mean I’ve worked on some big things before, but nothing quite like this.”

The X-wing takes up more space than you’re imagining. The hangar where it was kept was near other hangars, and other, actual planes. The model contains 5,335,200 LEGO bricks and weighs 45,979.61 pounds — but it isn’t all just LEGOs: Beneath the bricks is an impressive steel skeleton. After that, Varszegi says “You basically have to start from the ground up. It’s all glued, so we use not an adhesive but a solvent, so it actually kind of bonds the bricks together. And we go layer by layer by layer, and slowly it comes together.” The starfighter can then be pulled apart for transport with the help of a surprisingly simple-looking color-coded guide.

What’s more, the X-wing comes complete with a photo booth in the cockpit, engines that light up, and a slate of sound effects. “It starts off as this big bass rumble when the engines turn over but then this jet engine whine comes up and it’s like, ‘Alright, that’s loud enough. You can stop now,’” Varszegi says. “But it keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

The LEGO X-wing will be in Times Square through Saturday; afterward, it will be installed at LEGOLAND in California for the remainder of the year.

LEGO has been partnered with Lucasfilm since 1999 and “they’ve fielded some pretty strange requests from us in the past,” Varszegi says. But this was a special undertaking for another reason: The super-sized X-wing is promoting the premiere of The Yoda Chroncicles, a three-episode series, on Cartoon Network on May 29. Check back next week for our preview of The Yoda Chronicles.

EW approached filmmaker Kyle Newman (Fanboys) with a simple proposition: Will you make us a short film that collects famous voices talking about Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi and their feelings about the film as it reaches its 30th anniversary?

After sweet-talking him with promises of no money and too-little time, we mentioned that he was our only hope and, weirdly, that worked. The result is  The Return of Return of the Jedi: 30 Years and Counting, which shows elite geeks — among them Kevin Smith, Seth Green, Chris Hardwick, Jaime King, Topher Grace, Fall Out Boy, Eli Roth, and Jason Mewes — revisiting the movie in which tribal Teddy Ruxpins put down an Imperial invasion force with rocks, logs, and other Gilligan’s Island-esque props. Who saw that coming?

Without further ado, The Return of Return of the Jedi, which you should share with friends and strangers and do so early and often — we can only post it here though Monday.

We screened The Return of Return of the Jedi on the May the Fourth at the Entertainment Weekly CapeTown Film Festival in Los Angeles as part of a week-long celebration of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, animation, and super-hero cinema. The festival (a collaboration with the American Cinematheque) brought more than 7,200 fans to the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.

The busiest day was the Star Wars Saturday with four sold-out screenings of the finale film from the original trilogy. Mark Hamill was a surprise on-stage guest  after two of the screenings (where he was interviewed by EW’s Anthony Breznican).

Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today the promotion of John Knoll to chief creative officer of Industrial Light Magic (ILM) effective immediately. Knoll, who joined the company in 1986, has served as a visual effects supervisor since 1991. Knoll will serve alongside ILM president Lynwen Brennan.

“In John I see a keen eye and an incredible mind for creative problem solving and that’s what visual effects are all about,” said Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy. “Lynwen continues to successfully navigate the business through these challenging times and I’m confident that with her business acumen and John’s experience and passion for combining creative art with technology, the company will continue to perform at the highest levels.”

Brennan, who has been with ILM for 14 years and has served as president since 2010 noted, “I couldn’t ask for a better partner than John. I have relied on John’s creative input for years and I’m thrilled to make this role official. His creativity and laser focus on combining technical innovation with artistry has benefited not only our clients but the company as a whole.”

“I am thrilled that Lynwen asked me to take on this new role,” explained Knoll. “I am fortunate to work at a company as stable as ILM where we can focus our energy on the creative and continue to be able to bring together the right mix of talent and technology to keep ILM on the cutting edge.”

Well known for co-creating Photoshop with his brother Thomas, Knoll has been a driving force of innovation at ILM for years. In 1996 Knoll founded the Rebel (Mac) Unit at ILM, a creative incubator for fine artists and software developers to define working methodologies and advance the state of the art. This lead to the development of a variety of breakthrough techniques including some of the earliest examples of digital compositing for The Abyss, a tool to recreate optical lens flares in the digital realm first used on Hook, and a host of advanced digital camera projection techniques used on such films as Mission: Impossible, Star Trek: First Contact, and Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

Knoll was also a key contributor to the development of ILM’s cutting-edge on set performance capture technology, Imocap, which saw its first use on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and has been used on 12 films. Most recently it was used on the Oscar-nominated Marvel’s The Avengers.

In 2012 Knoll was elected to the Academy’s Board of Governors representing the visual effects branch and is a four-time Academy Award nominee. In 2007 he won both the Oscar and the BAFTA for Best Visual Effects for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Knoll is currently wrapping up work as visual effects supervisor on Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated science fiction epic, Pacific Rim, set to open on July 12.

This Saturday, “Star Wars VI: Return Of The Jedi,” the capstone of George Lucas’ original trilogy, turns 30. Not only does this mean you’re old, it means it’s time to consider precisely 30 things Lucas and his wildly successful franchise introduced into the world. Some (incest kiss) aren’t too popular; others are downright magical. But they’re all here thanks to one man and his crazy, mad expensive, dream. Time to scroll, like those revolutionary opening credits.

1. Crowd pleasing science-fiction. Big budget sci-fi movies before “Star Wars” tended to be apocalyptic, along the lines of “Planet of the Apes,” or “Soylent Green”. Lucas didn’t eradicate that genre entirely, but he made room for a new one. In a matter of a few years after “Star Wars,” we got not only “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” but the significantly kinder world of “E.T.”

2. A “used future.” Film scholars credit George Lucas for pioneering the concept (made famous again in later sci-fi movies like “Alien”) — with spaceships that are dingy rather than shiny, furnished with a hodgepodge aesthetic.

3. An unknown cast, but not for lack of trying. Luckily, Sissy Spacek, Jodie Foster, Al Pacino, and James Caan effectively turned Lucas down, and we landed up with Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Mark Hamill as young Luke Skywalker, and Harrison Ford, in his first starring role, as Han Solo.

2013-05-22-STARWARS1977_original.jpg

4. Which brings us to number four: Harrison Ford! We may think of Ford as an eternally dashing (and scowly) leading man, but before “Star Wars,” he was better known as “Airport Worker,” “Irate Motorist,” and “Bellhop,” in his earliest roles.

Blink and you’ll miss him: a young Harrison Ford plays an airport employee in Michael Antonioni’s “Zabriskie Point” (originally in English).

5. Lucas actually realized while developing his first trilogy that he was writing the middle of a series. We’re still waiting for someone else to release a movie franchise intentionally out of order.

2013-05-22-younggeorgelucas.jpg
Portrait of the franchise-ist as a young man: George Lucas in his “American Graffiti” days.

6. In that vein, “Star Wars” is also the first ever franchise to be conceived as a nine-picture series, a precedent that paved the way for ambitious studio undertakings like “Lord Of The Rings.”

7. The idea of springing a lineage between characters isn’t a new one (see Jane Austen’s multiple grandparent-grandchild reveals in a single page of her 1790 work, “Love And Friendship”). But Lucas gave us a way to refer to the trope neatly.

8. Self-evident it may be, but it’s still sort of mind blowing. No one ever said: “May the Force be with you,” until “Star Wars” gave us the catchall blessing.

9. Lightsabers are another needed-them-before-we-got-them gift from the famous franchise. Just try to imagine the world — or just YouTube — without glowing laser staffs.

10. Now-classic movies like “The Labyrinth” followed the lead set by “Star Wars” in offering us both puppet and human cast members to care about, for the first time.

11. Before Lucas, no one thought to wrangle references to Stanley Kubrick’s dystopian “2001: A Space Odyssey” into a release aimed at kids.

This YouTube recut splices the “Star Wars” trailer with that of “2001: A Space Odyssey” to show how greatly Lucas was inspired by the latter.

12. In fact, no one really thought to aim a big-budget movie at kids at all. Lucas somewhat infamously changed Hollywood’s favorite demographic nearly overnight — from adults to preteen boys — some say dooming us to an endless hell of “Transformers” movies.

13. Before Lucas, no one — not even CNN — imagined what a holographic telepresence might look like.

CNN covers “important politics”…with a hologram analyst, of course.

14. Same goes for a planet with two suns, until Tattoine, Luke Skywalker’s home planet. Which is why, when scientists discovered a planet orbiting and being orbited by multiple suns last year, it was, of course, instantly coined the “‘Star Wars’ planet.”

2013-05-22-starwarsplanet.jpg
An image of Kepler-16b, the most “Tattoine-like” planet yet found in our galaxy, according to the AP.

15. We’re still recovering from this one. “Star Wars” is the first (and only, by our count) all-ages movie with an incestuous brother-sister kiss.

Always known, Leia? Then WHY DID YOU DO THIS, HUH?

16. Today, the “monomyth” narrative arc, or “hero’s journey” conceived of by Joseph Campbell, is Hollywood’s bread and butter (witness every quest story from “The Matrix” to “The Princess Bride”). But Lucas’ open adoption of the structure for “Star Wars” is what got it to the hills in the first place.

17. Not exactly an achievement: no other franchise was re-released years later with widely-reviled CGI changes. You know which change we mean.

Let the Rifftrax guys explain.

18 .You can thank Lucas for “Fast 6.” Before “Star Wars,” Hollywood really hadn’t discovered the power of the sequel.

19. “Star Wars” remains the first (but not last!) sensation to get an awful holiday special. This one somehow starred some original cast members.

Bad move, newly famous Ford.

20. Lucas’ special effects master John Dykstra spearheaded a new era of computerized motion photography, which meant the movie’s miniatures and models looked more realistic than ever before.

21. The opening crawl! It had been done before, but never so smoothly. We now know that’s because it was filmed painstakingly, an effort that paid off in a legion of future imitators.

22. Thank Lucas when you zone out in a cool theater this August: “Jaws” may have been the first “summer event film,” but historians point to “Star Wars” as the instigator for studios to definitively shift Hollywood’s favorite big-budget season from Christmas to summer.

Yep. These are all movies you’ll probably see this season.

23. “Star Wars” introduced the notion of what film scholars call the “nostalgic blockbuster,” meaning it copies older versions of its genre (“Flash Gordon,” most famously) on a bigger scale. A later example: “Pirates Of The Caribbean,” which riffs on early 20th century pirate movies.

Compare and contrast: the “Star Wars” crawl vs. the opener to the 1940 Lucas favorite, “Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.”

24. Surround sound…ound….ound. Theaters were required to have Dolby Stereo, a new technology at the time, to show “Star Wars.” As the first film climbed to record box office highs, every cineplex worth its popcorn salt rushed to install the audio technology.

2013-05-22-lightsaber.jpg
Hear that? That’s the sound of your brain replicating the hum of a light saber.

25. Sound designer Ben Burtt was innovative in other ways too. Burtt experimented with lo-fi sound-making (according to Time, he actually just taped himself for R2D2’s chirps and whistles), an approach that was unheard of in big budget moviemaking.

26. Fox thought Lucas was crazy to accept lower pay in return for merchandising rights. Of course, given his epic returns, and the fact that “Star Wars” actually earned more in products than it ever did at the box office, Lucas’ was the first and last of those contracts.

2013-05-22-STARWARSTOYS_original.jpg

27. Lucas’ top-notch team of tinkerers basically gave us modern special effects. Before R2D2 and co., “there was no special-effects industry,” as critic Leonard Maltin once put it.

2013-05-22-starwarsspecialeffects.jpg

28.The game-changing success of “Star Wars IV: A New Hope,” made multiplexes a reality. For the first time, theaters built with the expectation that they could actually sell out multiple screens.

2013-05-22-MULTIPLEX_original.jpg

29. Video game designers also owe a debt to Lucas, whose creation of a special effects industry gave rise to more sophisticated games than just Pong. (WARNING: the video below features violence.)

You can’t ping pong like this in Pong. Yikes.

30. Before “Star Wars,” the only way to see pastiche in film, meaning stories and imagery knitted from several different genres, was by watching a Bollywood movie. Today, we have Baz Luhrmann.

On May 25, the third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, “Return of the Jedi,” will turn 30 years old. To celebrate, HuffPost Entertainment is publishing this exclusive excerpt from J.W. Rinzler’s excellent “The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” due to be released on October 1.

Die-hard “Star Wars” fans should appreciate this transcript of a July 1981 story conference for the franchise’s third installment, then titled “Revenge of the Jedi.” In attendance were series creator George Lucas, writer Lawrence Kasdan, director Richard Marquand and producer Howard Kazanjian.

To give the others a better idea of who Darth Vader is, George Lucas maps out the character’s pre-Dark Side life as Anakin Skywalker. Lucas’ words here, in 1981, offer a startlingly accurate preview of what would eventually become the “Star Wars” prequels, released between 1999 and 2005. And yet there are notable exceptions, as well. For instance, Lucas compares The Force to yoga and says anyone can use it, which seems to conflict with what we learned about midi-chlorians in “The Phantom Menace.” And he’s adamant that Yoda does not fight — an opinion he clearly revised sometime before 2002′s “Attack of the Clones.”

REVENGE OF THE JEDI STORY CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT, JULY 13 to JULY 17, 1981—SUMMARY
Participants: George Lucas, Richard Marquand, Lawrence Kasdan, and Howard Kazanjian
Location: Park Way House
Note: Many of the ideas here are conceptual only and should not be considered as canon in the Star Wars saga.

THE STORY OF ANAKIN

Lucas: Anakin Skywalker starting hanging out with the Emperor, who at this point nobody knew was that bad, because he was an elected official.

Kasdan: Was he a Jedi?

Lucas: No, he was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy. He sucked Luke’s father into the dark side.

Kasdan: The Force was available to anyone who could hook into it?

Lucas: Yes, everybody can do it.

Kasdan: Not just the Jedi?

Lucas: It’s just the Jedi who take the time to do it.

Marquand: They use it as a technique.

Lucas: Like yoga. If you want to take the time to do it, you can do it; but the ones that really want to do it are the ones who are into that kind of thing. Also like karate. Also another misconception is that Yoda teaches Jedi, but he is like a guru; he doesn’t go out and fight anybody.

Kasdan: A Jedi Master is a Jedi isn’t he?

Lucas: Well, he is a teacher, not a real Jedi. Understand that?

Kasdan: I understand what you’re saying, but I can’t believe it; I am in shock.

Lucas: It’s true, absolutely true, not that it makes any difference to the story.

Kasdan: You mean he wouldn’t be any good in a fight?

Lucas: Not with Darth Vader he wouldn’t.

Kasdan: I accept it, but I don’t like it.

Lucas: Well, anyway, Luke’s father gets subverted by the Emperor. He gets a little weird at home and his wife begins to figure out that things are going wrong and she confides in Ben, who is his mentor. On his missions through the galaxies, Anakin has been going off doing his Jedi thing and a lot of Jedi have been getting killed—and it’s because they turn their back on him and he cuts them down. The president is turning into an Emperor and Luke’s mother suspects that something has happened to her husband. She is pregnant. Anakin gets worse and worse, and finally Ben has to fight him and he throws him down into a volcano and Vader is all beat up.

Now, when he falls into the pit, his other arm goes and his leg and there is hardly anything left of him by the time the Emperor’s troops fish him out of the drink. Then when Ben finds out that Vader has been fished out and is in the hands of the Empire, he is worried about it. He goes back to Vader’s wife and explains that Anakin is the bad guy, the one killing all the Jedi.

When he goes back his wife, Mrs. Skywalker has had the kids, the twins, so she has these two little babies who are six months old or so. So everybody has to go into hiding. The Skywalker line is very strong with the Force, so Ben says, “I think we should protect the kids, because they may be able to help us right the wrong that your husband has created in the universe.” And so Ben takes one and gives him to a couple out there on Tatooine and he gets his little hideout in the hills and he watches him grow. Ben can’t raise Luke himself, because he’s a wanted man. Leia and Luke’s mother go to Alderaan and are taken in by the king there, who is a friend of Ben’s. She dies shortly thereafter and Leia is brought up by her foster parents. She knows that her real mother died.

Kasdan: She does know that?

Lucas: Yes, so we can bring that out when Luke is talking to her; she can say that her mother died when “I was two years old.”

Because Monday.

Over on Good Morning Gloucester, a North Shore lobsterman found a lobster that looks curiously like Star Wars character Darth Maul. Because everyone’s Monday could use a pick-me-up in which we imagine that a Gloucester lobsterman stumbled upon an underwater Comic Con for lobsters, we will pass on this information to you, dear reader.

And here’s Darth Maul:

darth

He wields those two claws like a double-ended light saber. You’re welcome.

“Return of the Jedi,” the third film in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, was released on May 25, 1983. Lucasfilm, the production company founded by “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, is celebrating the film’s 30th anniversary with a new book documenting the making of “Jedi.” (“Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back” already have books of their own.) “The Making of Return of the Jedi” won’t come out until Oct. 1, but HuffPost Entertainment will have an exclusive excerpt later this week in time for the official anniversary on Saturday.

In the meantime, we present the very first look at the book’s trailer, above, as well as an interview with the book’s author, J.W. Rinzler. Ahead, Rinzler’s best quotes on topics ranging from Harrison Ford’s Han Solo death wish to the rumors of rampant, behind-closed-doors Ewok sex.

On sex among the actors who played Ewoks:

I don’t know how much of that has been exaggerated over the past but, yeah, a few people had funny stories about having to knock on any doors that contained private places. I think there was one Ewok couple that did get married a few years later, which is not in the book, but that did happen. What they said, normally little people aren’t used to seeing so many other little people at the same time — so it was kind of a new experience for them.

On the trials of the director of “Return of the Jedi,” the late Richard Marquand:

Certainly George did not want to have a repeat experience of “Empire” in terms of the time and the budget … George wanted coverage of every scene, which he didn’t really get as much of with ["The Empire Strikes Back" director] Irvin Kershner. It made it harder to do what he does in the editing room — and for George, that’s where some of the most important filmmaking takes place, so he really wanted to get that footage and he was determined to get it for “Jedi.” And Marquand was kind of wondering at some points, “What’s my job?” Kershner was kind of — not exactly doing it like Hitchcock — but more like Hitchcock. Saying, “I know what this is going to look like. I know how it’s going to cut together.” That forces the editor into a single way of cutting it together, and George didn’t want to be handcuffed that way.

On Harrison Ford’s attitude toward “Return of the Jedi”:

Obviously, Harrison Ford career had taken a mega leap with Indiana Jones and he had just done “Blade Runner.” So, he was doing really interesting work. I think he was as interested as always, but he just felt that in terms of the character arc of [Han Solo], it would serve the story more if he died. And it’s well known that he was really pushing that. But George didn’t want to kill off a major character — or even a minor character — in “Jedi.” But in the story conference [with Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, Richard Marquand and producer Howard Kazanjian], I think you can see in hindsight that what happened was that Han and Leia, their storyline, didn’t receive as much attention as it might have. It’s not really Ford losing interest as it is neither character has as much to do in “Jedi” as they did in “Empire.”

On George Lucas’ divorce:

That’s not something I want to play up at all. It’s obviously in the book, and George is the one who talked to me about it … but he brought it up and basically kind of wanted it in the book because it was obviously having a big effect upon him at the time. As he said, he just had to drag himself to work during post-production every day.

On the legacy of “Return of the Jedi,” compared to “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back”:

In a way, “Jedi”‘s trajectory is similar to “Empire’”s. They both got mixed reviews, and a lot of the actors back then in 1982 didn’t even like “Empire” that much. They really preferred “Star Wars” and they preferred “Jedi.” Then, over the years, “Empire” has kind of appeared as a lot of people’s favorite. I was taking to Guillermo del Toro about this. Already with “Jedi,” you have another generation of filmgoers going to the theater. And for people like me, “Jedi” was already a kind of “The Phantom Menace” in that we’re like, “You’ve got to be kidding me with these Ewoks. I just cannot relate to this. These are little people in suits and it looks ridiculous.” There’s already a generational divide. But those kids who were seven and eight who saw Jedi — for a lot of people, “Jedi” is their favorite film. And del Toro is saying it will be the same way for the prequels.
